In this VSE Social Justice Spotlight, we talk with Mariya Taher. Ms. Taher is an expert in gender-based violence and for the past decade has been teaching, researching, developing programs, and directly servicing the issue. Ms. Taher received her MFA in creative writing at Lesley University, receiving the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences Dean’s Merit Scholarship and the Lesley University Graduate Student Leadership Award. She went on to receive a Masters in Social Work from San Francisco State University and a B.A. from UC Santa Barbara in Religious Studies. Ms. Taher has since held and continues to hold the positions of Co-Founder and U.S. Executive Director at Sayo, Narrative Liaison at Topos Partnership, Advisory Board Member at End FGM/C US Network, Contract Faciliator at StoryCente, and Board of Directors Member at Cambridge Common Writers. Because of her dedication towards the issue, Ms. Taher has become very successful at benefitting the issue of FGC that she so strongly advocates for.
